U3A Kingborough Inc.

We are an entirely volunteer-run non-profit learning association for retired and semi-retired people, with a focus on the Kingborough area in Tasmania. We encourage and facilitate overall wellness – learning for the mind, exercise for the body and social connection for the spirit. All this in an informal and friendly atmosphere - with no entry qualifications, exams, assessments or awards.

Membership

Welcome to U3A Kingborough.

The easiest way to become a member and be eligible to enrol in our classes, is to click on the New Member button. Complete the contact details and an invoice will be emailed to you. After that you have the option of registering to use the Member Portal. This will only need to be done once.

Fees

Our subscription fees are $60 for the calendar year. People joining later in the year are given a discounted fee of $45 from the start of Term 2, and $30 from the start of Term 3.

If you use the Membership Form you can pay your subscription fee in person by cash or cheque, either at Enrolment Day or during term time. You can also pay by EFT, as detailed on the membership form. Please ensure that your name is on the transaction record so we know who the funds have come from. Please do not pay cash at the bank because your name will not appear on our bank statement and we will not know who has made the payment.

Locations

For most classes and sessions offered by U3A Kingborough meet in the old Kingston Primary School building at 8 Hutchins Street, Kingston. This facility is managed by the Kingston Library. The entrance to the building is at the rear.

Parking

Parking is available in the Channel Court Shopping Centre (opposite 8 Hutchins St) but the time limits of 2 or 3 hours are policed and fines imposed for exceeding these time limits.

If you have not yet registered to use the Member Portal, don't try to log in yet. Follow these steps first:

Click on the Member Portal button
Click on Register on the right side of the screen
Enter your Email Address
Click on Next and then click on Send. This will send an automatic email to your email address.
Go to your email account and find the email from U3A Kingborough with the subject line Registration of Member Portal. The email message will contain a 6-digit number that you'll need to complete your registration in the Member Portal.
Go back to the Member Portal and enter the number in the field labelled Registration Number.
Click on the button Confirm Registration Number on the bottom right of the screen.
In the next screen enter your Password (new or old).
Click on the button Save Password on the bottom right of the screen. Make sure you keep a record of that password, so you can log in to the Member Portal in future.

You will now see a screen with your membership details. You can update your contact details, pay or renew your membership for 2026, be able to enrol in classes, and even print out a name tag!

Log out when you have finished.

U3A Kingborough

U3A Kingborough Inc started in 2000, offering courses at the old school building (8 Hutchins Street) in Kingston, (managed by Libraries Tasmania), at the West Winds Community Centre in Woodbridge, and other venues as appropriate. There were 118 members. The committee was: Sheila Given (Pres), Bernard Pettifer (V/P), Marjorie Major (Sec), Pat Neilson (Treasurer), Michael Atkinson, Don Gregg, Thelma Rider, Netta McLaren, Pat House and Sylvia McCarthy.

Class offerings covered the humanities, arts, languages and science. Costs would be kept to a minimum ($25 initially). Tutors and administrators would all be volunteers and an annual subscription would cover any courses available. Classes would be during the day, over 3 terms. The Kingborough Council provided practical support.

In the first term of 2000 there were 6 classes and 118 members; by 2010 there were over 267 members and 25 courses. Membership in 2010 was $39. During this decade, U3A Kingborough opened up to the internet and introduced a digital database. In 2020 there were around 380 members and fees were $50. In this period the range of exercise classes increased and a new commercially-developed system and website were introduced.

The U3A's Origins

Research and governments are increasingly recognising the importance of education in delaying or minimizing dependence in the rapidly growing older population.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international movement aiming to offer a range of activities associated with well-being in later life. Third Age refers to the life period of active retirement, following the first age (childhood and formal education) and the second age (working life), and preceding the fourth age (dependence). It’s a time (not necessarily chronological) where you have the opportunity to take on learning for its own sake. An underlying principle is that there are no entry requirements or exams.

The concept of U3A was developed in Toulouse in 1972, to bring older people into contact with academic programs at the University. The first British U3A was established in 1982 at Cambridge. They embraced principles of self-help and self-determination, structuring programs and courses to meet the wishes of members and drawing on resources available within the membership as far as possible. The concept spread to Spain, Australia, Canada & many other countries.

The first Australian U3A opened in Melbourne in 1984. Many others rapidly opened across the country. There are now about 300 U3A’s in Australia, with about 100,000 members. The Australian model has U3A’s established as autonomous groups, with their own administration and curriculum according to the needs and interests of each group. Whilst mainland States have formed State co-ordinating bodies and U3A Australia represents those bodies at a national level, Tasmanian U3A’s have not to date taken this step. However, U3A’s in Tasmania support the concepts, liaise periodically with local U3A’s and maintain contact with U3A Australia. U3A Kingborough has a cooperative arrangement with the New South Wales U3A Network.

Privacy Policy

To administer our organisation and classes, U3A Kingborough collects only necessary personal information about members. That information is securely stored in U3A’s Member Wizard computer system, which is developed and administered by a registered Australian IT company. Members can view and correct that information via the Member Login. U3A Kingborough will use its best endeavours to restrict access to only those requiring it for the purposes of administering U3A or delivering U3A courses, to ensure the privacy members’ personal information. Members’ personal information will only be disclosed for purposes directly relevant to U3A Kingborough operations, such as tutors and committee members.

Terms & Conditions

Fees are not refundable, except where:

a member enrols for only one class AND that class is cancelled before the term starts, OR
that class is oversubscribed AND the member has not been allocated a position in the class.

Such refunds are not automatic -- the member must apply for the refund to U3A Kingborough.

Everyone who \"works\" at U3A Kingborough is a volunteer. Without the people who give their time freely, this organisation would not exist.

Volunteer positions

There are some positions, or roles, that require some level of committment:

Tutors, activity leaders and class representatives
Members of the Committee, including the executive positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer
Organisational roles including: organising events, daily set-up and lock-up, communications, IT support, membership support etc

All these roles would benefit from an assistant, or backup. Do you have an interest, or skills in these areas? Give your contact details to a member of the committee, let them know how you could help. Consider joining the committee, which meets once a month or at our AGM in March.

Other ways to volunteer

There are many other ways you could offer your time to help U3A Kingborough. For many small tasks you could spend a few extra minutes before or after your class. There is no need to allocate another day unless you wish to.

Health benefits of volunteering

Volunteering offers vital help to worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer. Volunteering and helping others can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose.

Have a chat to anyone on the committee about how you could give some of your time to help others in U3A, and yourself.

How to Logon as a Member

You must first have registered your identity and selected a password or pass-phrase (see MEMBERSHIP on the website).

To register your identity you need to have access to an email address. Ask a committee member, if you don’t have access to an email address.

If you share your email address with another member, you must use your member number. If you do not know your member number please contact a committee member. The contact email address is shown on the registration page.

If you attempt to register and receive a message advising that you can not access the Member Portal then please contact a committee member via the email address on the registration page. It may be that your membership could be tagged as Inactive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help?

We rely totally on volunteers to run our organisation and present classes. We would welcome any help to do small maintenance tasks, record class attendance, find tutors to present new classes, contribute towards the newsletter, support our technology, help with events or join the committee. Just approach one of the committee members or send an e-mail to u3akingborough@gmail.com.

When are our classes (days/times)?

We have classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:30 and 4:30, plus walking groups on Wednesdays.

Where are our classes held?

Most classes are held at 8 Hutchins Street, Kingston, in A Block, the red brick building. The entrance to A Block is behind the building. However, some classes are held in C Block which is an adjacent weatherboard building, and a limited number of classes are held at other sites. The buildings are clearly marked.

Is there disabled access to the buildings?

The buildings have wheelchair access.

Where can I park to attend Hutchins Street classes?

There is limited parking behind the U3A Building, accessed via a driveway that is labelled Kingston Library Learning Centre from Church St, behind the Catholic Church. Please consider people with disabilities and other needs, such as unloading material, when parking in this area.

Parking is available in the Channel Court shopping centre (opposite 8 Hutchins St) but the time limits of 2 or 3 hours are policed and fines imposed for exceeding these time limits.

Can I get a tea or coffee on site?

We offer serve-yourself coffee & a biscuit for $1, on an honesty basis.

Is U3A Kingborough connected to government?

U3A Kingborough is not connected to government at any level, nor are we subsidised or paid by government. At times we may apply for small grants for specific purposes.

Are U3A’s connected?

While U3As support the overall principles of delivering education and wellness activities for older people, each U3A is independent. Our curriculum is targeted towards our local members and the organisation is managed by members from the Kingborough area.

Can a Carer accompany me?

Yes, an appointed carer may accompany a member to a class if requested in writing, giving the names of the member & carer and the class involved. This is provided the class is not already over-subscribed, in which case either the carer may wait outside the room or the member may wait until two places are available.

Will my membership fee be refunded if the class I want is full?

If you apply for one or more classes and there are no vacancies in those classes, you may apply (in writing via e-mail or letter) for your fees to be refunded. If you choose to join the wait list, your membership won’t be refunded, as most, if not all, wait listed members join the class during the term. However, if you apply to withdraw your membership in this way, you won’t be wait listed for your desired class/es.

You may apply again for membership and enrol for the next term at the appropriate time.
