The President's Pen

U3A Kingborough has been a busy organization in Term one.

In the afternoon of April 14th over 60 people enjoyed a successful quiz challenge at Kingston Gardens with U3A Clarence taking first place and one of our U3A Kingborough teams awarded the wooden spoon. Next time we must have more historical Kingborough questions! A big thank you to Richard and Julie Gardam, the quiz masters of ceremony; Julian Goldsmith, question creator and committee members for making the event happen.

A perfect day for a BBQ at Dru Point was enjoyed by a gathering of members and friends on April 16th. The food and beverage was plentiful and both sausages and conversation sizzled.

At the AGM new committee members Robert Parsons and Laurie Francis were elected along with acclaimed returning members. But STOP the press, we need a newsletter editor. (see Help Wanted). A big thank-you to Louise Stewart who has graciously stepped forward to do this newsletter. I also mentioned U3A Kingborough will look into strategic planning to take our not-for-profit organization into the next 3-5 years. I welcome any comments or suggestion you may have for our forward planning.

Our total enrolment is growing and this is reflected in 43 new members to date. Members are coming from as far as Bruny Island, Gardners Island, Glen Huon, Lenah Valley and Howrah. I suspect our articles in the Kingston & Cygnet Classified and Kingborough Chronicle helped. We all join U3A for the varied and interesting courses which are well organized by the programming people and presented by volunteer tutors. Well done ladies and gentlemen.

U3A Kingborough applied and has received a grant titled "Telstra Connected Seniors". Details of the mobile phone and internet training are contained in this newsletter.

Last but not least this is our 10th Anniversary year. "A Record of the First Decade" by Dr Sheila Given will be launched at the mid-year lunch. Watch for more details coming soon.

Finally to close a quote:

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest!!" ~ Ben Franklin

Library News

Many thanks to all the U3A members who have donated books to our lending library. More shelves are in the works.

All newly donated items can be placed on the trolley for labelling, and once labelled, are free to be borrowed and enjoyed.

As we lack space please donate current magazines or Pictorials e.g, 40' South, This England etc. Well out of date magazines, eg. computer, media information or similar unfortunately cannot be accommodated.

The cupboard in Room 2 contains Art Books which are not part of our library, so please return books previously borrowed.

Thank you.

 Monday 11:30 KA3

We will read excerpts, and provide insight into the authors, characters and settings as a basis for instigating discussion of issues raised by the books. Could you please read one of the novels “The Butterfly Man”, “River Wife”, or “White Heart” by local author Heather Roseas in the fifth week we intend to discuss them as a group. Happy reading!

 Monday 1:30  KA3
 All About Bridges  David Leaman
The story of that critical piece of infrastructure we know as a bridge – from antiquity to the present day. This is a tale of genius, innovation and embarrassment which is often high art combined with economy and utility. Do not miss this.
David is well known and a popular tutor at U3A. He is an eminent geologist, geophysicist and ground water specialist. His many other interests include railways, history and music. He has written several books.
 Monday 1:30 - 3:30  KA3
Mae’r Gymraeg yn Hawdd – Welsh is Easy!  Peter Ball

Ten sessions of Welsh language for beginners, emphasising the spoken language, as it is used in Wales today. The sessions are scheduled for two hours, which will include about 30 minutes of light relief with music, video, etc. on Welsh culture. This is to help us progress quickly enough to get a sense of achievement, and still keep our motivation up. New members are welcome who have had introductory Welsh lessons.
The general approach will be based on the very successful “Wlpan” beginners' course regularly run in Wales, which was derived from a system developed in Israel for teaching Hebrew to immigrants. It involves plenty of activity, a lot of talking, and very little writing – a great deal of fun, in other words. Free material from BBC Wales and S4C (Channel 4 Wales) will also be accessible.
Peter from Bristol, studied in Hull and Belfast, before lecturing in Uganda. In Tasmania he taught and researched at our Uni in social psychology, psycholinguistics and related fields. His recreational interests include choral singing, art and studying languages.

 Monday 1:30 -3:30 KA2
 Writers Group Marian Hearn
 Class limit 15 .

It is perhaps a measure of the success of the Writing Group that, since starting 8 years ago, 6 writers have independently published books and 2 years ago the Group as a whole combined to produce a collection of their work. However, this is a group where there is no pressure to actively participate at all. Members are welcome to sit and listen until they feel confident to take part.
The class usually starts with an exercise to get the writing started then the results are shared – sometimes thought provoking and often hilarious! After a break for a cuppa there is a chance for those who wish to share a little of their current personal writing – true stories, fiction, and the occasional prose or verse. By joining this course you will be encouraged to develop your own writing skills and will gain knowledge and inspiration from the work of others. Old and new writers very welcome.

These matters & others are up for discussion and comment.
